Canatara is Wheelchair Friendly

Canatara is Wheelchair Friendly

May 17, 2012 at 7:42 am

150 feet of wheelchair and walker-friendly material is being installed at Canatara Beach.

This is the 3rd year the matting has been laid out by Sarnia’s Park’s and Recreation Department. Accessibility Coordinator Susan Weatherston says the closer you can get to the water, the more enjoyable the beach is.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The matting is made of very heavy plastic used originally by the military for planes which had overshot the runway. The strips will be in place until Labour Day weekend.

Walpole Land Deal

Walpole Land Deal

May 16, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Walpole Island First Nation could soon see a long standing land claim resolved.  The community has been informed of a settlement offer in a series of newsletters.  Band Council is not commenting on the land claim settlement but a newsletter for band members says the offer is for 28 million dollars and would be administered through a trust.  The update says council believes the offer is fair and has accepted it, but that doesn’t make it a done deal.  The community still has to vote on the settlement and on details of the Trust.  A date for that vote has not yet been set, but band members will have ample notice of it.  The newsletter says in order to move forward there must be a majority vote, but a majority of band members.
